Different Light Locations: Part 2 of 2

Previously, we discussed frontlight and backlight; now, we will discuss downlight and sidelight. These are a very important part of lighting as they provide dimensions and light to the performers.

Moving Heads Used As Stage Lights

Downlight works very well as an addition to the backlight; they add extra dimension to the stage. These lights are placed on the stage's foot and point up at the performers. They will often line the edge of the stage and provide even lighting across the stage. These lights will differ in intensity, but most are able to change color. Downlights can also refer to lights pointed directly upward or lights mounted above the stage with beams directed downward at the stage or crowd. Downlights are an important part of any stage and will make any performance look much better.

White Downlighting

Front, back, and downlights are not enough to cover every angle and make the vision complete. You also need sidelights and high-side lights; these are grouped into one category because they are mostly the same. Sidelights are placed on the horizontal edges of the stage and are used to light the performer's head and shoulders. High-side lights are placed on the side of the stage in a high-up position. This allows them to get the top of the performer's heads and more of their shoulders. These lights combined make the facial expressions of the performers very prominent.

Gold Sidelighting On A Stage

All of these lights together make a very well-lit stage with every angle of the performer lit. But when lighting a stage, you must remember that there are infinite possibilities for the location of lights, and the best location depends on the stage.
