Different Light Fixtures: Part 2 of 3

This continues my previous post about the different kinds of lights used in a production and theater environment. Previously, we went over spotlights and hotsticks, and today, we will go over floods and fresnels.

A Light Behind a Mic

You may have heard of a floodlight before. These lights are designed to produce a wide-angle beam that brightens the stage. These lights come in two versions. The first is the LED version, which you can change to any color, and the second is the gelled version. The gelled version uses colored gels to change the color of the light, so it is not as versatile. These gels will also wear off quickly because of the high temperatures of this fixture. This is why the LED version is much more common. These lights are very useful and make lighting a stage much easier and more colorful!

The fresnel is a light that not many people will have heard of before. This is a weaker, less concentrated version of the spotlight. It can be used for the same purpose as the spotlight but is often used for backlighting or top lighting. With a Fresnel light, you can also adjust the beam angle using the knob on the back of the light. This knob moves the LED light source closer and farther away from the lens to expand or shrink the beam angle of the light. Fresnel lights are not very common on production stages but are often used in theater sets and photo shoots.
